Patara was the capital city of the Lycian Union. In the history, Patara was recorded by the Hittites in 13th BC.  Patara was excavated in 1988 and many buildings have been unearthed. Especialy the city has signs of Cristianity that Saint Nicholas who is also known as Santa Claus was born in Patara. The city was the only place to open the Mediterranean Sea from the Xantos Valley. Patara was also the grain store to be transport from Anatolia to Rome. During the rule of the Seleukos Kingdom, Patara became the capital city of the Lycia in the 2nd century BC. With the Roman control, Patara kept its position and importance that it became the naval base where the governors had their judicial affairs and a connection with the eastern provinces.

The ancient city is located on the route of the Lycian Path and next to one of the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. The beauty of the sandy beach is remarkable. The 18 km beach is also the home of the Caretta Caretta turtles.
