Phaselis was founded as a coastal city in the 7th century BC, located on a small peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea. Phaselis was part of the Lycian League where the main income was the sea trade, and the harbors were the busiest ones in ancient times. Phaselis hosted different civilizations as well, such as; Persians. They made it a significant city that eventually, the city attracted Alexander the Great. After Alexander captured the city, he stayed there for about one month. Then the city was captured by the pirates until Roman rule. After Phaselis became a bishopric center during the Byzantine era, the city lost its importance and eventually was abandoned in the 13th century.
