ANATOLIAN FORTRESS

The Ottoman Sultan Yıdırım Bayezid built the Anatolian Fortress in 1394. As the first step in bridging the gap between Byzantine lines and gaining control of the Bosphorus.

The fortress is the first Ottoman architecture in Istanbul. It was variously called “Yenice Hisar”, “Akca Hisar”, and “Guzelce Hisar”. There is one main tower, with an inner tower and surrounding battlement walls. Anatolian Fortress is located on the Asian side by the Bosphorus.

It was both a defense and custom building. In the 17th century, they added a small mascot-chapel mosque and an open prayer place – namazgah. The Ottomans first took control of the Bosphorus before they conquered Constantinapolis. In 1452, Sultan Mehmed built the Rumeli Fortress just opposite the Anatolian Fortress. They are both located at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus.
