APHRODISIAS

Lying 150 km. Inland from Ephesus, in the upper Meander valley, Aphrodisias differs in its historical roots from the Greek and Roman cities on the coast. As nearly as the Stone Age, inhabitants may have worshipped the Sumerian goddess of love and fertility, Ishtar, known to the Assyrians as Nina. An Assyrian trading post, established there in the 4th millennium BCE, sustained links with Mesopotamia. Later, Carians, who settled on the site, named Ninoe after its legendary founder Ninos.

The cult of Aphrodite, so central to this city, evolved from the veneration of Ishtar. By classical times Greeks throughout the Hellenic world revered Aphrodite as an omnipotent fertility goddess who retained the attributes. You can book Aphrodisias Tour with Romos Travel.
