The Ghost Town (Kayaköy in Turkish) is an old Greek village with hundred stone houses stretching side by side and never obstructing each other. The Greek inhabitants migrated to Greece after the “Exchange Population” between Turkey and Greece in the 1920s.
Some churches survived Greek times; one is called Taxiarchis, located in the upper part of the village. The other one is called Panagia Pirgiotissa, located on the western side. The second church was used as a mosque until the 1960s.
The village’s former name was Levissi, the oldest and the biggest well-preserved Greek settlement on the South of the Aegean. When you walk among the stone houses, you can imagine the ancient daily life of those people.
